everything in its right place

While i was unloading the dishwater, throwing away boxes, filtering my mothers text messages, pretending that my carrot sticks were half baked chocolate chip cookies, and bubbling water (not a euphamism), I decided that I wanted to make some tea. But none of that fair trade ginger mist packet, I was was going for it, fresh root and all.

As I scrambled around the kitchen like a mentally challenged hyena to get everything needed: fresh lemon, mint, and ginger root etc. I got distracted thinking about everything there was to focus on (is my car double parked? Can my insurance company physically harm me if I keep ignoring them? Was that clerk from whole foods straight?) And before I knew it I was out back unloading trash. 13 distractions later I was back in the kitchen where John was looming in front of his fully loaded cutting board  ready to give me a lesson or two:

Listen up ( incredibly stylish) grasshopper:

“In the kitchen Jessie we have this term we call Mise en Place” it means “everything in it’s place” if you lay it all out before hand ,  when it’s time to go you’ll be ready…”

Need I point out the obvious metaphor? (well Issy had to tell me but YOU’ RE clever enough to know better)

mise-en-placejohn’s board; mise en place
